Since 1971, Meals on Wheels has delivered one hot meal a day – 365 days a year – to those who might otherwise go without, due to the inability to shop or cook for themselves. The hot, nutritious food and daily visits by caring volunteers help our clients remain healthy and independent, exactly where they want to be – in their homes. Everyday, including Sundays and all holidays, our caring volunteers deliver just-cooked, balanced meals. The deliveries are made between 10:30am and 1:00pm. Meals on Wheels prides itself on providing our clients with healthy food, the opportunity for personal contact with friendly volunteers, and the ability to maintain a greater degree to of independence. Because of the generous donations and grants from a variety of sources, meal costs are subsidized. Clients are charge no more than $4.75 per meal. If a client has special circumstances, Meals on Wheels will take that into consideration. The meals are prepared daily by Valle Verde Retirement Community. Valle Verde has ServSafe certified management on staff and follows the Hazard Analysis of Critical Control Points (HACCP) process for serving safe food. The meals are made in their commercial kitchen by a professionally trained staff. A registered dietitian works closely with the staff to ensure the food meets strict standards for preparation and quality. Each hearty meal includes a main course, two side dishes, soup, salad or fresh fruit, dessert and a carton of milk. Special dietary requirements (such as diets for diabetics, those who require chopped and pureed food) can be met as necessary. |
